      @brutus5000

usa, and great britain, but all country have this rank with their own language.

its not military "knowledge", its basic knowledge.
people in z-generation dont know that captain is bigger than corporal? my god....
but we can replace example brigadier.

if u havent sports knowlege u dont understand gold and silver, bronze too...

Is it working in CS, nobody complaining about military rank.

@miki1900 It shouldn’t be what you personally think is best, but what the majority think. Given the Olympics and sporting events more generally, most people are familiar with Bronze < Silver < Gold, and even if they aren’t they would have a decent idea based on market values or other video games (which typically have gold being harder to get/more valuable than silver), far more so than the specific hierarchy of particular US military ranks.

As another example, personally I’d prefer 1 to be weaker than 4 but if a majority thinks that 1 is stronger than 4 then by similar logic it makes sense to have rankings based on the current way around.

Everyone knew bronze < silver < gold since 3000 b.c. before sports even existed

            what diamond?
            what master?

            Goes after gold.

I was born in the 80s and here in central europe this is not common knowledge.

Have to agree with the most common argument here - military rank is not common knowledge at all. Not even for the populace of the countries that use them.
At best, you can argue people kinda understand the concept of captain (someone who has a larger number of men under his arm), admiral (controls big naval army) and general (controls big land army). And that's also mostly skewed from popular media (because that's how most get their knowledge).

So yeah, neither common (in its naming scheme), nor common knowledge.

The "material" badges are common place in a lot of games to represent competitive rank. I'm sure 95% of the children populace would sooner understand if you told them you were "diamond" rank rather than "corporal" or whatever.

Also, as already mentioned, there's not only 3 tiers (bronze, silver, gold) to the FAF's ranking system, there's 6 (bronze, silver, gold, diamond, master, grandmaster).

Most games have ties to the Elo system, which, although not used by FAF, is the most prominent and actually well known system to rank competitive mastery. And it has its roots in chess, from which the "master" and "grandmaster" titles are derived from.

Still ignoring the fact there's more than just bronze/silver/gold. If you like the idea so much, expand what on Diamond, Master, and Grandmaster rankings should be called.

Even the topic aside if your system is better than the current one (which i think is dumb). You still have not made any suggestions for diamond, master and grandmaster

There are a lot of military ranks. Do u want more? Why if the majority dont know, that major is bigger than captain?

To be honest, I think it's based on weight.

I like these types of flavour text names since they relate to the aesthetic and lore of the game in a fun way. A lot of the fps games I've played have used similar and I've like them every time. The star craft wannabe names and symbols have always grated on me, but I guess that ship has sailed.

People mention familiarity, but what about the FA campaign? 'Brigadier General Fletcher', 'Colonel Arnold', 'Elite Commander Dostya', 'Princess Burke', 'Evaluator Kael', 'Crusader Rhiza', 'Avatar-of-War Jaran Marxon'. It's literally in the FA lore and you would have experienced it if you played the campaign. You could mess around with this to great effect with the in game ranking system. Imagine faction specific rankings too. So much potential.

Is there really an issue with not knowing the order? Is the initial experience of not knowing rank names so bad that seeing someone ranked 'Major' would concern an actual player? To a kid playing the game, and from my experience from when I was younger, these types of things provoke curiosity of the type 'I wonder what it means to be Major. When you rank up and see a new player with a rank you haven't seen before, it's exciting. You want to see how they play. It's fun. I think the pseudo larp of having 'real' ranks is fun. Why do people keep bringing up some sterile platitude of accessibility?

Seriously, think about it. 'Brigadier coca', 'Elite Commander ovenman', 'Avatar of War Derick Bobjack', 'Commander FTXCommando'.

Only real draw back is I only played in english. Not sure how the campaign translates these to other languages.

                                        I want my gesamtkunstwerk.
