    • RE: Council of Setons EXPOSED - Part 1

      To be frank this is just unacceptable way of managing an organization.

      Few members of the council can't stand eachother, ok. So instead of resolving the conflict internally and finding a way to work together, you (and i mean all councillors ...) choose to make this some kind of public showdown, and no less that at the time of the PC election ...

      What are we suppose to do as players ??? Judge this childish conflict and say who's wrong who's right ?? Are we supposed to vote for team 1 or team 2 depending on who throws the more text and revelations ?
      The common player like me has NO IDEA of what your little conflict are, and we don't care, are we supposed to catch up on years of drama to vote appropriatly ??

      Seriously, i want to vote for some concrete stuff like how we will manage tourneys and ladder. This bullcrap is just turning this election into a joke, it's annoying to witness, and completly uniteresting ... And it's taking so much space that i can't find the will to read the PC election thread anymore, even though i'm interested into what the candidates are offering for the game.

      Can't you just collectively get your shit together and act like adults ? Or are you going to feed us hundreds more pages of pointless talk ?

    • [Format discussion] 2v2 weekly showmatch - The Commanders of Calypso

      Disclaimer : this is the thread to ask questions and discuss about the Commanders of Calypso, to register please go to this thread.

      Right below are outdated discussions from May 2021, when i first talked about the subject, updated rules are on the thread i linked above.

      ================================

      Hi there,
      While everybody is concerned with the election, i'm entertaining the idea of resurrecting on old weekly tourney that was going on between 2007 and 2009 in the french community.

      I'll spare you the cringe lore about the secret guild of pirate commanders hidden on the planet Calypso, their mighty leaders designated by the law of the strongest, the pantheon .. etc. I might translate all this old post later to hype people up, but for now i'll just stick with explaining the format :

      • 2v2 weekly match between two teams
      • the winning team is the champion team, next challengers fight the champions next week, on a map the challengers choose. You beat the champions, you become the champions.
      • the tourney goes on as long as people register to challenge the champion
      • after X consecutive wins, the champions enter the "pantheon" and can't play anymore. They are forever champions of Calypso and get a mighty avatar. This opens the title for weaker teams (notably if the champions are just steam rolling everybody).
      • if this goes long enough, you can even have tourneys or showmatches between teams in the pantheon.

      So that's it, basically. Few rules have to be set up :

      • do you go for one single match (it used to promote cheese strats), or some BO3 for a longer stream
      • how many consecutive wins to enter pantheon
      • a map pool or some rules regarding the map chosen by the challengers
      • few rules to avoid "base donation"
      • a rating limit to avoid stacks of the top 20 best players fighting eachother forever ?

      💡 This last point is important and has to be discussed. I remember this tourney to be very "casual" : the champions used to be good, but not unbeatable. It used to be a big deal, because everybody in the community thought they had a chance, and also because you would be featured in an event followed by everybody with around 100 viewers weekly (it was just the french community remember !).

      Now i'm not sure we can recreate that .. without rating limit, it would become a big show of all the pros, which can be interesting. With a rating limit, it can appeal to a more casual player base ... I'm really torn on this.

      Don't hesitate to comment on this idea. I have an exam in June, so won't host anything until this summer, so plenty of time to talk it out.

      In celebration of the 15th anniversary of SupCom, I propose that one ladder map pool will contain only OG SupCom/FA maps.

      Few maps I would personally like to see again :

      • Finn's
      • Crag Dunes
      • Blasted rock
      • Canis river
      • Four leaf clover
      • Haven reef
      • High Noon
      • The Dark Heart
      • Saltorck Colony
      • Snoey triangle
      • Sentry point

    • Is aeon arty nerf a bit too much ?

      @Fremy_Speeddraw can you explain the heavy T2 aeon arty nerf ?
      The damage was probably bugged i agree, but nerfing the accuracy as well ? Right now, aeon arty misses small stuctures (a mex) 40% of the time (small testing on ~15 shots here : #14147797), i'm afraid lowering the accuracy that much render it completly useless against small structures. 2.5 accuracy is cybran's arty accuracy, which has double the AoE to compensate.

      Have you been testing ? What are the results of it ?

    • RE: Chrono Dampener Rework

      My impression as Aeon 1v1 ladder player. I cannot speak for lower ratings and for TMM.

      The situation it fixes :
      If the duration of the stun is tuned appropriatly, it would end two frustrating situations :

      • Your units just can't chase a retreating chrono ACU, cause they get stunned out of their gun range, and can't progress past chrono range (i think percy is the only non sniper unit which can chase and shoot at a chrono acu ?)
      • Once caught in the chrono field and if the ACU marches forward, your units have very little room to escape, if none, which often leads to the death of all units caught.
        I'm fine with those situations being less oppressive : the DPS and movements of units should be impaired, but not cancelled completly.

      But :
      If you nerf the range / duration too much, you might end up with some t2 units being barely affected (think of the hoplite or the mangoose for example). I think chrono should give you a decent edge against those units and not only vs low range tank (pillars/ obsidians / rhino / t1 tanks ...), because it's an upgrade that comes late due to its price (usually you need 2 t2 pgen to afford it with decent assistance).

      Last observation about the relevancy of chrono:
      The fact that chrono has a low window of opportunity already prevents it to be seen and abused in 95% of the games. Think of it, chrono ACU becomes obsolete once one of those unit comes into play : snipers, percies, few t2 pd, and of course the threat of t2/t3 air snipe. Only cybran have limited options to counter it.

      I play 100% aeon, and I can barely find you replays of me winning just because of chrono, because
      1°) it's hard to find the right opportunity to use it, and it's often very dangerous
      2°) once the opponent knows you have it, he can retreat, make pds, avoid your acu, or make t3 counters ... Basically it only kinda works when rushed on maps like twin rivers, open palms, badlands ... and if the opponent is surprised by it.

      So please don't make it completly useless 🙂

      It is indeed the only AA that dies to all bombers (except Aeon) in one pass. And seeing your entire army, including AA, dying in one bomber suicide raid is quite demoralizing sometimes ^^
      A little +10 HP to bring it to 260HP and resist the sera bomber (and help a little against UEF and cybran) would be good quality of life improvement.

    • RE: Stop putting small rocks everywhere

      I feel you CPTANT, also hate this aspect of the game, it's not very fun, it's not very rewarding or satisfying ... As Thomas once put it, it's just like vaccuming your house, a boring chores you have to do ahah.

      I wish map designer would put less little rocks in their future maps. If those rocks are for decorative purpose, just use other models that contain no mass (maybe we could make alternate version of the existing rocks, where they contain no mass).

      This being said, it's not much of a problem at low-medium level. As others said, just use automated reclaim (patrol, attack move) and you'll do just fine on most maps. It only becomes mandatory to use some manual reclaim when you aim for the top level, and even pros are most of the time lazy about it, manual reclaim is just something you do in the very early game.

    • RE: Cybran Frigates

      @Exselsior said in Cybran Frigates:

      Granted, I also agree with your point that it's not good game design to have a faction that's only good on some maps and not others

      Wtf are you and tex talking about, the entire game is designed around the fact that factions are not the same and have defined strengh and weaknesses ?? Are you saying the existence of the aurora is bad game design ? 😛

      Faction diversity is a strenght of the game imo, it forces you to think about the matchup and about your strategy. I'm completly OK with cybran having the most powerfull frigate and having my aeon frigates suck ass, as long as I can develop some viable strategies to work around that (torpedoes, air, dropping, some micro, going t2 navy ...). That way instead of having identical gameplay where everybody makes the same units, the game tells you "nope, you're not winning against cybran frigate by mindlessly spamming your own frigates, think something else".

      Now I agree there is a problem in the very early game, where cybran frigs can snowball out of control due to them winning any 1v1, and some counterplays are not very viable (subs are cool but don't really stop the frigate from rampaging mexes/engies). That's why I think of increasing the potential for micro. Maybe tweaking the turret turning speed or the firecycle, or the projectile physics.

      ========== LORE ============

      45unX2hSODs.jpg

      During the Infinite War, mercenary commanders were many, selling their services to the most offering. Traitors to their nation not yet willing to side with their old enemies, they wandered the Galaxy, looking for opportunities to display their combat skills. Courageous knights for some, lawless pirates for others, they devoted their lives, regaining the honour that they once were stripped of.

      Without bond, home or family, they had to gather in order to survive, forming a powerfull guild: the Commanders of Calypso. Cybrans, Aeons and the UEF despised them, viewing them as rogue soldiers without ethics, faith or order. Yet, they couldn’t do without them, and were paid handsomely, as their aptitude in combat was unmatched, their prowess, legendary.

      For centuries they served the 3 factions .. Until they decided to put an end to their involvement in this useless war, and to go their own way. Their hiddeout was situated on planet Calypso, surrounded by mountains. There, they would build their homeworld. A city where the law of the strongest reigns, for the betterment of everybody. Abuse was rare and severely punished by the two Champions of the Guild. From their throne at the top of the mountain, they would reign, in the name of justice.

      Since the beggining of the Guild, there has always been just the two of them, chosen among the bravest of the Commanders of Calypso.

      To become Champion, is to accept the rules of Calypso.

      One such rule: never turn down a challenge. Only then can you prove your worth, and stay in function. Losing means steping down in the ranks of the Commanders, and accepting the rulership of the winner.

      Throughout the ages, the wise and courageous Champions of Calypso have left their mark on the history of the Galaxy. Victory after victory, the most glorious of them are now part of the Pantheon of greats, and will forever be remembered by humanity as the Masters of Calypso.

      Such glory however, comes at the high price: acquiring many enemies.

      And while their advanced tactics and wits would allow them to evade death, defeat would sometimes spell the end.

      Battle after battle, their numbers dwindled, leaving too few commanders to maintain the colony on Calypso. The place was long forgotten, but its spirit lived up to legend, passed on by the survivors.

      Today a new generation of renegade commanders have risen up. They’ve heard the story of an abandonned planet, and they are ready to make Calypso great again!

      "Commanders ! You have been expelled from your faction, and are now Commanders of Calypso! Will you be strong enough to challenge the Champions and become Masters of Calypso?"

      ======= Event Structure ========

      • Win a match to become the current Champions of Calypso, then ascend to the Pantheon and prove you’re real Masters of Calypso by winning 5 matches in a row.

      • Each week, two teams of Challengers will try to defeat you, if they win they become Champions, and will try to ascend themselves ! Anybody can challenge the champions ! You don't have to play every week, you just need to play at least 2 sundays when champion, see extra rules.

      • Register here to fight. First to register is first to play.

      • Commanders of Calypso love to watch a good fight, the event will be covered live for everyone’s enjoyement.

      • Two separate leagues:
        Champions of Calypso (rating limit <3800), Admirals of Calypso (rating limit <2800). Your rating is the best of all ratings (TMM, Ladder or Global).

      ===== Game Format. Maps Selection ======

      • Each Challenger Team plays a single BO1 on standard TMM rules (which means fullshare) against the current Champion Team. No veto. There are two teams to play in each league, which means 4 BO1s will be played in total, each Sunday.

      • Maps are selected by the challenger team and are kept secret until the day of the event. No map pool, be creative! Keep it between 5x5 and 20x20, and don’t pick obvious cheat maps … Mappers can’t play on their own maps.

      • Time restrictions : turtles are lame, you fight to kill your opponent, not to kill the audience with boredom! When the match exceeds 45 min, the TD have the power to stop the game ! He will turn to the cheering crowd and ask if the participants are worthy of continuing to play (we vote on FAF Live).
        If the public consider the game to be lame and campy, the game is stopped and is considered a draw. Shame on you ! Champions will stay but won’t get any point, challengers walk away in shame. Think about it before picking your map and strategy …

      ========= Registration ==========

      To register:

      • Post a message on this forum with your current names and ratings
      • Send a pm throught discord at Auriko#5386 or with the !offlinemessage command on Aeolus, telling me what map you wish to pick.

      I will then validate the map or not.
      You’re considered registered only after I validate your map. You’ll be put on the waiting list, where you can see at which date you play.
      Remember that if you win, you will have to play for a few more sundays ! You can always drop and leave your place to the next challengers, but we won't keep track of your wins, you'll start again from 0 !

      ====== Upcoming Challengers =======

      3WBqdISo1ro.jpg
      (first two to register will play mapgen 10x10 to determine who are the first champions, so the two first teams to register don't need to pick a map)

      • Team xxxx and team yyyy - 26th of September 15:00 UTC (3800 rating)
      • Team xxxx and team yyyy - 26th of September 16:30 UTC (2800 rating)
      • Team xxxx and team yyyy - 3rd of October 15:00 UTC (3800 rating)
      • Team xxxx and team yyyy - 3rd of October 16:30 UTC (2800 rating)

      ========= Extra Rules ===========

      • Champions have one joker: they can ask for the game to be played another day other than sunday (if they are unavailable). In this scenario they play their two BO1s or a BO3 against a single challenger team, which then will be casted on sunday. They can’t use this twice. If they can’t come next sunday, they will have to drop out of the competition.

      Note that champions need to play 3 consecutive weeks to ascend to the Pantheon.

      • Giving the base or groups of unit to your ally is allowed. Hidding in the water to force the game to go longer and exceed the time limit is a lame trick, and therefore punishable.

      • Champions and challengers can drop at any time, and would be replaced by the next challengers, but to avoid last minute drops, I will ask to be informed 2-3 days previous to the event. Failure to comply means you can't register for the next 3 month.

      Note that with the time limit, the event cannot last more than 3 hours, and one team of champions does not have to play more than 1h30m on sunday. It’s meant to be short, so you can play every week!

      • You can register again once you have lost. Challengers play in order of registration, so if you want to try again, you just register again (this will put you bottom in the queue). Teams that have ascended to the Pantheon cannot register anymore. Challenger teams can substitute at any moment, but once champion, there is no substitute possible, you play all your games with your mate.

      • The TD might change if i’m not available. Check this post when registering to know who you should contact with your map pick.

      • For the very first games of the series, or in case Champions drop from competition, the map will be 10x10 mapgen with tournament settings, and the 2 first challengers by order of registration will fight.

      • If one week, not enough player are registered, a BO3 can be played against one team of challengers instead of 2 BO1 against 2 teams.

      • It’s a fun a casual event with no money involved. If anything comes up, I might have to take arbitrary decisions, like i took many arbitrary decisions while making up the rules of this event. I’m open to discussion, but ultimately, you’ll just have to deal with it, or overthrow me and host the tourney yourself 😛

    • Looking for an epic screenshot of 2 ACU

      Hey i'm planning on hosting a 2v2 event. There is some lore attached to it, and i want to illustrate it with a cool banner/screenshot.

      The event takes place on planet Calypso, where a bunch of rebel commanders hide in the mountains. At the top of the mountain stand the two champions of Calypso. And they fight together when some other commanders challenge them.

      So i'm looking for either a screenshot depicting the planet Calypso, a bit like those two ... cYAbQgvxfQ8.jpg 45unX2hSODs.jpg

      Or some pictures of the two ACU fight alongside, or standing at the top of the mountain ... I have found few nice pics in Sid's epic thread, but none is exactly what i'm looking for.

    • RE: Ideas for Mercy changes

      Now my opinion : I am not in favor of just tweaking numbers and keeping the design as is, i'd rather see a rework of the unit. Current design has too many problems to be fixed with just small tweaks.

      Now you guys bring up interesting point toward a full rework.

      We talk a lot about frustration of getting sniped, but the frustration of using this unit is also very real, to the point where you never make it because it's too risky. I would rather have a weaker unit than a powerfull one that you can't reliably use. So for me the "1 HP, Low Fuel" aspects of the unit should just disapear. Higher HP (even if it's low) is a good step to make this unit more reliable. Bigger size, why not but what for exactly ?

      Now based on what you suggest and on the last "AoE DoT" idea, i can see a design where :

      • The goal of the unit would be to snipe isolated immobile targets such as buildings and to zone units. So it's not an ACU snipe unit at all
      • The damage is DOT, so you can react by moving out of the zone or repairing the building being damaged.
      • The aoe is large, damage small, but duration quite long, so you can use it to zone units off of a zone
      • The mercy would be more "missile", and would fly in some sort of straight line, with little room to turn/ change direction
      • Once the target is set and speed is max, it's hard to change direction, so it won't follow easily moving units. The payback for the mercy user, is that the mercy is harder to shoot at max speed.

      Basically you would use the mercy to pick off isolated building like you would do with TML but here the counterplay is static AA instead of TMD. And the second (main) use of it would be to zone off units.

      Maybe that's too big of a change, i don't know ... But i can see it being usefull and not too blatantly overpowered/frustrating to play against.
