    • The cache is not purged

      I was investigating on my sound issue with localized voices and noticed the cache was not purged after FAF updates.

      So many FAF obsolete versions are remaining stored there for nothing.

      Take a look at AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\cache

      BTW :
      I'm wondering how to run FA with the /purgecache command line switch through FAF.

      More about this issue :

      I've noticed by verifying "AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\Game.prefs" that the voice volume was OFF, while it was at MAX in the Options window in-game :

      options = {
          (...)
          vo_volume = 0,
          (...)
      },
      

      The localized voices are still muted in spite of my attempts to :

      • set the volume to the MAX from the Options window in-game.
      • click on [Apply].
      • click on [OK].

      I've even thought I had to quit the game and launch it again after this change, to no avail.

      I've openned game.prefs with NP++ and noticed the value was still vo_volume = 0,.
      So I've changed it for vo_volume = 100,, but it's had no effect at all.

      FA v1.6.6 's localized voices are definitely like "broken" since I installed FAF, even by running the game without FAF.

      Help will be much appreciated.

    • FAF doesn't "know" where localisation files are !

      Everytime I launch FAF, my FA v1.6.6 (Steam) is turned to English language, while it was initialy in my native language.

      The problem :
      FAF has changed my game.prefs for an incorrect language !
      Open AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\Game.prefs and take a look at :

      • the field language = 'us',
      • the field selectedlanguage = 'us',

      while these should be set on my country code...

      Also, FAF is ignoring where to access the good old localised audio folder and files :

      • When I set it to some language, the Tutos won't play given they're in english because the engine is "lost in translation"..
      • FAF is set to english by default and doesn't set for us the proper localisation.

      Last but not least :
      I noticed that the visual parts of the speeches aka videos were hugely accelerated with no audio. (like 5 times faster)
      IMHO this means the XACT Audio engine is one of the main cause of FA's slowdowns...

      You're so righteous that you convinced me to disable forever the mods that sit here FAForever Data\cache\featured_mod\gamedata, by hoping to be able to enjoy the game with the few interesting updates/new features only.
      Among other things I wll get rid of : the still-work-in-progress-SACU-thing, the HQs buildings system and the "rebalanced"-engies

      I must to underline that FAF devs have left no choice to toggle on/off those features (through mod manager ?), they are simply imposed... and they don't fit all players.

      I've appreciated the patience of some helping persons and thank them a bunch for their efforts.

      The other ones were just a background noise...

      This was done because some players found the shields too tough.

      I've read somewhere that CoreMaximizer was good for Win 7 users only...
      It was given on GPG as THE solution to the use of multi-core CPUs...

      However I don't know how does the game manage the multi-core GPUs

      Small screenshot from a recent game. 16 minutes in with speed set to +0, but it slows down to -1 due to too many units.

      Is there still an issue with pathfinding computation ?
      Unless you're playing on a laptop PC, being short in DDR RAM and/or with a medium end CPU / GPU ?

      Laptops are way too compact to embed enough components and to be cooled down efficiently in the mean time...

      Not mentioning the quality of internet connexion of all players in a game. (I've played with people who had a terrible wifi connexion, frequently disconnected , or their sync was delayed... what a pain)

      Some persons like FAF as it is. Some don't for their own reasons.
      I'm in between them.
      I think FAF could be much more cool, but the genuine FA engine has its weaknesses due to the dev's tech choices... They complained about Xact Audio engine for instance, if I remember well.
      There was a "similar" issue with Total Annihilation 's Peewees and Flash Tanks that was solved by turning off their weapon's sound.

      Please, just make a pause : stand back and take a sit, then consider the whole thing.

      What would you think of such RTS game which doesn't allow you to spread any buildings freely ?
      Who like games that are limiting high tech building cap ?

      Side note :
      Buildings are counted as units, which is wrong IMHO.
      Why ? Because they are not units, as simple as that.
      So my idea is to no longer include buildings within the unit count.
      This might lead to create a separated building counter.
      This way, when you'd see 1000 units in your counter, this would mean you have 1000 running on the battle field, buildings excluded.

      IMHO, this would mean there should be 2 totally different SACUs, including their visuals :

      • a SACU that's purely a fighter with its pre-build stuff. But isn't this the T3 bot's and eventual T4 bot's job to be such Rambo ?
      • a SACU that's purely an engie with or without its own pre-build stuff, remaining unaffected by the order of its upgrades.

      And what about LOW Tech engineers that became more efficient, turning suddenly HIGH Tech into useless engies (or so) ?
      errr wait ! WHY and HOW could they be more efficient ?
      Higher Tech is meant to be superior to lower Tech or does the world now turns upside down ???

      EDIT: my feeling is the game is becoming some sort of Starcraft and this sux hard. FA is losing its soul and its uniqueness !!!

      I'm feeling a bit lost with all of the changes.
      Maybe this will change after a few game.
      But I'll be busy from next week, this lets little free time for playing.

      Now I think my thread should move to general discussion... or not.

      I agree Air Factories are the only one that change so little after techin up, while the other ones have a neatly different look.
      Maybe my memories are confusing some old mod's Air Factories on which I've worked with the non-mod"ed ones.

      If I was able to do it in a short time, then I'd make new models that would work like Land Factories and their "towers"...
      Result : buildings instantly spotted.

      About icons:
      This makes me think of my attempt to get "WYSIWYG" like icons in SC and FA back in the days.
      Icons shape were looking like units's shape...

      Historicaly , the buildings gain 1 "Tower" per Tech level :

      • 1 "Tower" = T1 (the initial look of a factory)
      • 2 "Towers" = T2
      • 3 "Towers" = T3

      This way to show up Tech levels was (and is still) good, clear, not ambiguous.
