    • RE: Developers Iteration III of 2023

Sometimes I think Jip should just stop posting any news at all bc of all the shitposting he gets in return.

People have been asking for years for the mobile factories to be fixed, he's doing it. And two of the them aren't ready yet. What the fuck is the problem with you guys? So much entitlement.

    • RE: Looking for New Client Maintainer

I have next to no experience in Java, nor do I even really like the language, but I do have experience in .Net WPF.

I think I could put my dislike of Java aside for FAF at least and try helping out.

    • RE: Nerf Novax radar

You mentioned something I never thought about in regards to a way to nerf the Novax.

      Inertia.

What if we gave it massive inertia, more than any other unit in the game so that it couldn't just turn on a dime and retarget so fast? That's part of why it can be borderline OP, its ability to retarget fast enough to snipe shields being built or other volatiles in quick succession.

It is a satellite after all, it would make sense for it to have such inertia.

    • RE: How come you don't play ladder?

I was going to say I just don't enjoy 1v1s in general. I just prefer team games more. But Rezy & Sladow make a really good point about BO whoring. I don't know and don't feel like learning the optimal BOs for all the 1v1 maps. If there was a map-gen only 1v1 queue, I would probably actually play it.

    • RE: Game Councilor

The level of entitlement I've seen over the last several days on this forum is incredible.

Jip & co have brought FAF to a new level over the year+. Be happy we aren't stuck playing on a clone of GPGNet, instead we have people willing to continually work on and improve the game. The performance improvements alone are more than we could've asked anyone to do. The fact they're trying to modernize the game to a degree without access to the source code is a feat itself.

Jip more than communicates enough and is always open to feedback, don't blame him because yall don't make an effort to keep up with development nor do you play on Develop to test the changes. Instead, make an effort to be part of the process if you're so unhappy with it.

    • RE: The End of FAF

Free speech is your right to say whatever you want (within limits, crowded theater & fire) without retaliation from the government, not the right to avoid the consequences for what you say by private entities.

Every online platform has rules surrounding speech, it makes no sense to not have any here. People are here to play a game, not deal with whatever vitriol people want to spew at them. It's not hard to not be a complete asshole. If you go through multiple bans just from saying shit, then you have some serious personal problems and anger management you need to deal with in your real life. But sure if you're worried about losing players due to bans, imagine not just how many you'd lose from an increasingly toxic community, but how many you'd never even gain in the first place.

    • Will TML ever be balanced?

Anyone that has played my lobbies recently has probably seen me complain.

It is absolutely asinine that for the cost of a single TML you can kill a T2 mex, its wreck, and the surrounding storage.

And that cost to benefit ratio is only made worse(better) by how fast you can pump out missiles and kill more mexes completely.

Obviously "just build tmd idiot!" is the current solution. The problem being it costs way more mass & more importantly time to cover your mexes in TMD than it does to build and fire the TML. This depends on map size and mex layout of course.

I'm not much of a numbers guy so I'm not gonna get down into the stats of it all, but something really needs to change and I don't see anyone else talking about it.

Is it not more selfish to force 5 or 7 other people to deal with your shitty cpu than it is for those players to not want to play with you?

    • RE: The 3v3 tmm is the best thing to happen to faf

I haven't gotten a single map in 3v3 that I would actually consider a decent mapgen, which lends itself to the low game count I have in the mode. Honestly really miss 4v4 queue, the games were much more balanced and with much better maps.

    • RE: I cri everytim

I think mapgen has been great. There's been plenty of mapgen games going up, and it's not hard to fill one if you host yourself.

But honestly I think the main problem is there's just no real easy way to learn the game for brand new players. They basically get shoehorned into gap, astro, etc. Then they stay there because learning other maps is a big step. Setons for example, you need to learn a build for every spot and most good players just don't want to deal with having a noob on their team.

I think FAF could really benefit from new tutorial system that teaches general build orders that can be used on a bunch of maps, especially mapgen as well as getting into more advanced builds for popular maps like setons, twin rivers, open palms etc. As well as tutorials on specifics such as manual reclaiming, unit build orders in factories, scouting, eco management, things like that. Ideally this would be integrated into the FAF client for easy access.

Obviously that would be a ton of work, but I think it would be great for players trying to learn. As it is, it's basically try a new map, lose a bunch, get bitched out a ton for being bad, watch replays of better players and try to work out their builds for yourself.

    • RE: Code Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Even if we somehow had the money, and SE was willing to sell, it'd probably be better to just put that much money towards developing a new, modern game.

    • RE: I prefer customs over tmm.

I enjoy both, but I think there are things that could be done to enhance TMM.

Off the top of my head:

      • An MM chat window on the MM page of the client so everyone queuing can easily talk to each other. The chat is already there, but it's only for you group afaik
      • A "Confirm" button like so many other games have when it comes to MM so if you disappear for whatever reason you don't get thrown into the game
      • Maybe add a 5v5 queue? With multi-queuing I could see people potentially queuing up for both 4v4 & 5v5. Though I know 3v3 wasn't all that popular so might just cause the same situation.

Also random idea, maybe as a community we could have a monthly vote on a mapgen map to add to the queue, just to keep variety up. People can submit their favorite mapgens of the month and then vote on them.

    • RE: What would be an efficient use of FAF's funds to improve FAF?

Maybe pay for RTS focused youtubers or streamers to play/cast the game. I don't really know many, but I do follow Lowko for SC2 replays and he's always been a great caster. I wonder if he'd be interested in sponsoring FAF.

    • RE: Why does everything suck so much right now?

SC2 and FAF are different enough mechanically that I don't think the targeting priorities are even comparable. Not to mention, actions in SC2 are near instant, whereas in FAF they have a 500ms delay. Microing targeting is far more feasible in SC2 whereas in FAF it's just an infuriating experience where by the time your attack order processed and the units stopped moving they're probably already out of range of what you targeted. Or you're telling your GC to manually target power so it stops moving and then doesn't even fire (A frequent experience lately) vs using ATP and it killing power while continuing to move.

There are many things I'd argue are pushing the limits of what should be considered a UI mod, but ATP should honestly just be made part of the game.

    • RE: Why does everything suck so much right now?

Not really related to FAF, but there's countless pieces of software you could probably ask "Why would you bother contributing to this?" about. But if we didn't have those contributions from those devoted developers, the open source world would be quite a bit worse off for it. So many projects rely on developers that just pour their heart into projects for reasons that would confuse most people.

That said, this thread as totally devolved. I don't think it's fair to accuse Jip or other contributors of trying to force changes when they've simply followed the established process. If you have a problem with the process, that's a different story that I think could be more civilly addressed, but attacking contributors who have kept this game running makes no sense to me.
