    • Fear, fruit, and f***ed up hardware: 10 questions with Banani after the Summer Invitational

Hello everyone. I decided to conduct an interview with @banani after the Summer Invitational, and this is the transcript.

Hi Banani, thanks for agreeing to this interview.
For those unaware, Banani is a high 1800 rated player who has just competed in their first tournament, the Summer Invitational, placing top 12; a very respectable placement alongside players such as Se7en, Luceid and Adjux.

So, for those people who are getting to know you, could you share something about yourself?
My friends introduced me to FAF. I've played around 1200 hours of faf over 2.5 years; I mostly play ladder but you can also find me chilling with my buds in minigames or non-standard FAF game modes.

Some people didn’t know this but in the Summer Invitational you had some technical issues, could you talk about those?
My PC died 5 days before the starting of the main group stage. I went to my friend's house and borrowed his laptop to play and got a bit rusty and had done no prep. I even lost my gamepref file which got me really frustrated.

What do you think affected your gameplay the most?
The thing that almost got me depressed was getting used to a new mouse and keyboard. I always missed the right additional buttons and used wrong hotkeys that I have in muscle memory. Also, I cant deny there was a lack of apm, I'd say it was reduced by 2 times at least and I felt crippled.

Do you think you would have gotten further without these issues?
Blast_Chilled was the opponent most on par with me and my games against him were deciding factor for me to advance, and if I had had my PC, I do think that I could've advanced further.

Some players read others’ build orders and prepare for certain tournament maps. How much did you prepare for the tournament and how were you invited or scouted?
As I've said, my pc got broken so I had no time or opportunity to prep for the group stage; in the end, I used my ladder experience. I wasn't scouted, I decided to register in it when I noticed the post on forum. My friends said I was crushing, and I was bored of the same 4 opponents in my range, and I decided it would be a good testing ground for my playstyle.

Now, even without your hardware issues, many players were calling you an underdog due to your newcomer status. How do you feel about this?
When I first saw the bracket and all those flashy nicknames, I was really worried at getting at least in top 12 qualifier, and about showing my skills from ladder. But when it came to actually playing I did not feel anything but the joy of advancing to next opponent.

Were there any players you were worried about facing, or were you approaching each game similarly?
I was scared of almost everyone and I treated them as if they were 10 steps ahead of me. Almost all of the players were new to me and I did not know about their playstyle; I was just happy that I was able to play Seraphim.

During the qualifying stage, some people called your victories unexpected or upsets, especially those against Inspector_Kot and Blast_Chilled. How does this make you feel?
To be honest, each of my victories made me feel that my efforts have not gone to waste and they felt truly great. I don't find those victories unexpected since I'd beaten them a few times in ladder and become even stronger since then.

If your PC was fixed and your group offered you a rematch, would you take it now or would you take time off to relax and improve? Will you rewatch any of your games from the tournament?
Yes, I'd instantly take that offer since I am yet to become rusty. If they gave me more time to improve I would've shown them an even better perfomance. As for my replays, I don't think I'll watch them since I believe all my mistakes were related to pc problems than skill.

Can we expect to see you in future tournaments, be they Invitationals or fun tournaments like Crazyrush and Astro Crater?
Sure thing. But next time I'll be joining with an intention of winning. My intentions are to face against all those rare and skillfull opponents!

Now for some quickfire fun questions:
Any maps from the map pool you hated or loved?
Loved crazyrush and hated 5x5 Neroxis (editor's note: random map generator).

Is there anything you do to get into a competitive mood? Got a favourite playlist?
      Total Annihilation music mod.

Any other players you look up to?
All of the players 1800+ on ladder.

How does it feel being able to call yourself a FAF pro?
Dunno. I can't say I am a pro yet. Wait till I beat Tagada.

What helps you focus on your game the best?
      A strong opponent.

Can you give us a tip for aspiring pro FAF players?
You can get better by spamming games.

Where did you get your name from?
Better to be a fruit than a vegetable.

Thank you so much for your time, Banani. What a warrior's spirit, always searching for the best and fairest challenge. Good luck in your future tournaments!

    • Map Bounty Thread

      What is the idea?

Some matchmaker-viable maps aren't played enough, and either make it to the ladder with bugs or never make it at all. We (me, alongside the FAF creative team) aim to change that by forcing exposure for maps in exchange for rewards.

      How does it work?

      You complete:

      • fair, unstaged game(s)

      • with replays that don't desync

      • that fulfils a bounty posted below

      • and post a link to the replay here

First valid replay to a bounty wins the points.

      Rewards

You can cash out your Map Bounty Points (TM pending) for the following rewards below at any time.

      5 points

Map Hunter tier I badge (badges in final polishing stage)

      10 points

30 minutes to an hour with me or Jip to discuss map designs and map ideas

      25 points

$10 towards official FAF tourney of your choice under a name of your choice (Current stock: 10/10)

Map Hunter tier II badge (requires Map Hunter tier I)

      50 points

Your name on a decal on my next map

$40 commission credit with me for mapping

Map Hunter tier III badge (requires Map Hunter tier I + II)

More rewards will come in the future as we approve, code and make resources for them.

    • RE: This is how you get more people to play ladder

Ban maps. They are horrible. 99.9342% of games end. 100% of maps are not fun. All the maps are garbage and depressing. If you ban maps from the ladder pool you will get more people touching grass. Maps are anti-productive, they are anti-fun and anti-everything. Would you enjoy playing a game with strategy that changes based on the playing field, no, nobody would, in exactly the same way nobody likes maps.

Please consider banning them from the pool, or at least drastically reducing them to 1, MAYBE 2 in the pool if they must stay. They are toxic.

The idea was to create a navy-dominant map with strong land elements (air was always going to be relevant due to map size). Here we can see this idea manifested in multiple long islands that can be fought over by land but cut off by sea. Most of the mass on the map is vulnerable to navy, so that secures it as the primary theatre, but the capability of hover vehicles to navigate the numerous ridges should not be underestimated.

    • On the idea of map bounties

It's no secret that there are a lot of potentially viable new maps that have not received the amount of attention, competitive testing or approval needed to be put into matchmaking and tournament pools. One of the hardest things to do as a mapper, apart from actually make good maps, is 'break into' the competitive mapping scene. The second hardest thing to do is make sure your map has no issues before hitting matchmaker.

I wish to start a bounty thread along with @Jip. The idea is we post bounties, such as:

      • 1v1 on Verisimilitude: 1500+ rating, Bo7. Reward: 10 points to each player
      • 4v4 on Argon FAF version: 500+ rating, min. 2 games or 40 minutes gametime. Reward: 5 points per player

These are just examples to illustrate the idea. We'd post bounties regularly and issue points to the people who complete them first.

The question is, what sort of rewards would you like to see?

      Some examples:

      • Custom badge/avatar: 5 points
      • $10 towards tournament of your choice: 10 points
      • $5 Steam or GOG credit: 20 points
      • Tier 2 bade: 25 points
      • $40 commission credit with CaptainKlutz: 25 points

      Again, just for illustration.

What are your opinions on this?

On the day, if someone gets crushed and loses 0-3, then you may be called to start playing earlier. There's no time limit for the Bo7 so it's likely there will be overlapping games throughout the day.

Jip and I will be casting and analysing the maps on Saturday. No FAFLive caster has dedicated themselves yet but some have expressed interest.

    • RE: Why does everything suck so much right now?

There is one thing that should be made crystal clear:

FAF, as a game, does not suck.

The numbers for monthly games and users don't lie- people love playing the game, the network issues are trending back to stability. The maintainers and contributors to the game have done an excellent job in ensuring this game lives on.

Where FAF sucks, then, is elsewhere. Community, expectations, and the experiences of the people who have given the most to the game. It sucks for the dedicated players, the ones who have given the most of their time to the game over the years. It sucks for contributors on every level, from news crew, to game team, to map makers, to modders. Why?

In my opinion, it's because there's a gross disconnect between the expectations of where FAF is and should be going. I believe there was a period of stagnancy after massive changes, such as the engy mod integration, where the meta ideas of FAF stabilised. Jip is not incorrect when he says the first year of work he did mostly aligned with what people expected of FAF and where it should go. But other, bigger changes see much more resistance because the massive majority of pro and casual players got used to the meta developed by the relatively stagnant periods of development.

In my mind, it's a good opportunity for everyone invested to step back and thoroughly evaluate not only their expectations for FAF but what others expect too. FAF cannot stay completely static but it may also be too late for drastic changes. Contributors want space to try new things that may result in great experiences, but they take time and require patience from the people most sensitive to changes like this.

For myself, the answer I found was that making maps is not terribly rewarding as people have developed favourites from the past years, and so I have decided to only contribute when I feel the desire to express myself creatively, rather than chase being on the matchmaker pool every month.

I think a reassessment on where things should go on a personal and game design level is a healthy thing that everyone should be doing right now.

    • klutz writes an out-of-season april fool's balance patch

      General changes:

      • The first factory built each game is free for each player
      • All navy now moves at 67% of original speed
      • Land and amphibious movement speed now depends on terrain roughness. Hovers are exempt.

      T1 changes:

      • Added new stationary Tall Point Defense units, or TPD, which are 4x taller than normal point defense but have less health and a tiny cost increase. They can't be protected by walls the same way PD can. The UEF Warden shoots inaccurate but splashy auto-flechette rounds, the Cybran Gorgon is continuous laser beam emitter with low dps, the Aeon Stalwart shoots homing rockets at an extremely low firerate but massive alpha strike, and the Seraphim Olaia deals minor damage but in an entire radius around it.

      T2 changes:

      • All factions get a melee unit except Aeon, who already have the Obsidian. These units have extremely small ranges but are exceptionally tanky. The UEF Peacekeeper is an AoE flamethrower tank that excels at early T2 rushes, the Cybran Swindler has radar stealth and its attacks directly convert the enemy's health to mass at a 50% efficiency, and the Seraphim Ymasla uses an unstable lightning core for its short ranged attacks, which persist after death for a short while similar to a miniature Ythota.

      T3 changes:

      • Added the Air Defense Fighter to all factions. Slower and much lower dps than the ASF, but exceptional range and splash damage like CZAR's fizz launchers. The UEF
      • Added Airspace Denial Launchers to all factions except Cybran. These are similar to TMLs, but have lower total missile capacity and faster, airburst rockets that devastate interceptor and ASF clouds.

      T4 changes:

      • Added an ability to the Soul Ripper: Afterburn, which increases its movement and attack speed by 20% for 20 seconds but burns 20% of its max health over 30 seconds. Cooldown: 30 seconds.

    • RE: Game-enders that end games

typically people don't like it when the opponent can just make something that equates to an "I win" button; an important part of fun competitive games is counterplay and the ability to feel in control of whether you win or lose. the most important part about FAF game enders is it takes them about 10 minutes to completely close out the game.

losing instantly to something, even if it's incredibly obvious your opponent is doing it, is a one way highway straight to salt.

for historical examples of previous mechanics that ignored the signs above, see the shitstorms surrounding the following:

      • fiora, star spring, bandle tree (legends of runeterra)
      • tacnuke (modern warfare 2)
      • pharaoh (the entire game)
      • cultural victory (civ IV)
      • technology victory (galaciv II)
      • control warrior, uther of the ebon blade, mechathun (hearthstone)
      • aetherophasic engine (stellaris)
      • world government (rise of nations)
      • generals (world of warcraft)
