To clarify some stuff about how the Official Tournament will end up going:

First, here is a layout of how Group Stage performance will result in placement for the RO8.

Second, as you should know, the Group Stage itself will be a round robin. This results in potential situations where ties can happen and where tiebreakers will be needed.

The first way to address ties will be by using point differentials. Essentially if someone is able to win 2-0, they will gain 2 point score differential in their group. If they win 2-1, they only get 1. If you have more point differential with a person you tied, you rank higher than them.

If points and overall performance are both tied, then a tiebreaker game will be used. There are two scenarios for this.

For example, say in Group A you have a situation where:
Player 1 wins against Player 3 and 4, loses to 2
Player 2 wins against Player 1 and 4, loses to 3
Player 3 wins against Player 2 and 4, loses to 1
Player 4 loses to everyone

This means there will be a 3 way tie. In this situation, the person that performed the best in their qualifier will advance as seed 1 from their group. This means that in Group D, the person that got 1st in Qualifier 4 is considered the top seed.

Then, the two other players will play a BO1 on a map that will be decided by the TD. Then, the winner gets the 2nd seed and the loser fails to move on.

In the case of a 2 way tie all that will happen is a BO1 game to determine who gets which seed.

I have a question about the main tournament. Will the maps that will be played be known in advance and is it possible to announce them 5-10 minutes before the start of the tournament in order to avoid completely nerdy builds for each maps in the games. I don’t know if I’m wrong, you can say something in the opposite direction.

I will be announcing group bracket maps after the final qualifier (not the sub qualifier). I will announce the maps for the RO8 tournament itself after that, unsure of the exact time as of yet.

Prep shouldn’t be discouraged, it’s what separates the best from the great. The tournament will operate with the same veto/choice system so prep will still involve a strong knowledge base of a good quantity of maps.

The Group Brackets are finalized. Subs will be able to fill in if people fail to show up/resign prior to the tourney date. A reminder that if you forfeit your placement in the tournament, you also forfeit your ability to claim your piece of the prizepool.

People that have made it into the Groups can give me 6 maps that they would like to play in the Group Stage through PM on FAF/Discord/Forums. I will take their preferences into account while making the 15 maps. However, I need the map picks by this Wednesday.

In addition, I'm still looking for 1-2 additional TDs that could help manage the group stages. If you have an interest, message me. You will be responsible for keeping track of the faction picks and map picks of the 4 players in a specific group.

So some final adjustments to the tournament format following some realizations during the qualifiers:

There will be a rule enforced to keep anyone that isn’t EITHER a caster OR a TD out of the observers. I will be talking with moderation to take action and both force close your client through admin tools and ban you from FAF if necessary. Please do not make me do needless work because you feel obligated to be a nuisance during FAF’s largest event.

If you’re a player, feel free to kick them before the game begins, though I know it’s hard to tell who is and isn’t a caster so the burden isn’t on you.

I will be making the tiebreaker map in the various best ofs be decided by a sequential veto from the rest of the pool left between the players in the series. This means bottom player begins with first veto again, then top player, and so on for 3 rotations until the 7 maps are reduced to 1.

@FtXCommando I might be misunderstanding the situation, but if we really are having this kind of issue, wouldn't this be easily solved by just having the games be password protected?

It’s a solution, just really annoying as now players need to be pm’d by casters, need to pm opponent, games could launch without a caster by accident (already a thing without passworded games)

Hi, what unit cap setting should we use? Just played a game on ditch and 1k seemed brutal low (hit it already 18 minutes in). Also warning to other players: supreme scoreboard unit cap is bugged right now, but it works without the mod.

The tourney will use base default settings for all game options. I do not have a problem of people going up to 1500 unit cap so long as both players agree to doing it. If you want to scale up unit cap, just let the other player know before launching the game. If he says no, then launch with the default unit cap.

Also as another small thing, please do not choose close to identical colors during your games. It’s not funny and there’s no reason to do it other than to spite people that might cast/stream the games later.

Good post @arma473 But I deleted the stat post for now. You included information that specifically linked players to their faction vetos and that is unfair asymmetric information for other players to use.

I also couldn't just delete the segments that had it because people can look through post editions on the forum.

I copied the post into a google doc though, it can be posted at the end of the tournament.

Actually just realized you also put that into the game replay post so I had to remove that too. I saved that one as well anyway, just message me if you want access to the doc I put it into.

Comparison to LotS 2019

In the 2019 Group Stage, 41 of 56 matches (73%) was a mirror matchup.

Four of the possible non-mirror matchups were played only a total of 2 times out of 56 (3.6% total): Aeon-Cybran and Seraphim-UEF were each played once. Aeon-Seraphim and Aeon-UEF were not played at all. In 2020, those four matchups were played a total of 27 times out of 54 (50% of all matches).
